Emergency Dentist in Spring TX Urges Alert after Patient’s Socket Scalds Face in Tech X-Ray Machine A North Texas dentist is warning people after one of his patients says he got second-degree burns on his face after getting an X-ray at the clinic. Justin White said his ordeal started when he was coming off of a 40-hour shift and headed to the dentist. He thought he was about to be sedated, but that wasn’t the case. Instead, he was told to lay down on the floor to get an X-ray. The dentist didn’t give him a mask or eye protection, and he found out his mistake when the doctor began to push liquid into his mouth.

White was then left with second-degree burns on his right cheek and forehead. “You’re looking down on your face, and everything is just gooey, and it’s kind of hard to breathe,” said White. “It was horrifying. I’m already in a panic, and it’s going to hurt, but you can’t breathe, and then it swells up on you.” The dental practice is called “UT Health Dental Care” in Spring, Texas. The practice said it’s aware of the incident and that the dentists involved have been counseled. “The individual involved in this patient’s treatment did not properly ensure the safety of the patient or the patient’s head after removing the sheet mask from the head,” said the clinic in a statement. The clinic said it is now monitoring the safety of their X-ray machines. Dr. Brad Spring, the emergency dentist in Spring TX who called 911, said if you’re suffering a dental emergency, emergency responders are more likely to take you to the hospital. “You’re in pain, you need something to wear, and sometimes, if we can get you out of the emergency room, you’re better off at home,” he said. Emergency responders said if you have any other concerns, call 911 or get to a hospital. So that’s the conclusion that we’re reaching with this patient is an acceptable reaction.” “That’s not just one thing that was normal,” she added. “We could do a lot more training and education.” White said he feels lucky he got treatment, even after he complained to the clinic about the burns. “If it weren’t for the doctor that I saw this afternoon, this wouldn’t have happened,” he said. The dental clinic said they provide emergency care to anyone at no cost. White said his family has filed a claim with the clinic. CBS11’s Lisa Haymes said the clinic did not respond to her request for an interview about the claim. Dr. Brad Spring, the emergency dentist in Spring TX, also said he was not available to talk on the phone. When asked to respond to what the clinic said about the incident, he said, “I can’t talk about this.”
